Writing poetry comes easily to me and I spend time writing when I really should be doing things like ironing or making tea. It’s all about priority I guess and I’m happy with a ready meal from the microwave if it means I have more time to write.
I feel that as I am dyslexic, writing is a great outlet for me, something I can do, something I find relaxing and fulfilling. Poetry just flows and rhyming words come along quite happily. I don’t read poetry, in fact I don’t read at all unless I have to. I do find that poetry though is more accessible than a huge thick book. Poetry is generally short, broken up into stanzas so not much to look at at one time. Reading can be very overwhelming when faced with a full page of text, then you turn over to see another page full of text and another and another. Poetry I hope is an easier read for those who find reading more difficult.
My first book contains many poems, all about being a parent from pre-birth to strting school, and beyond. Some of the poems are lighthearted, some are funny and all are completely loveable and from my own experience as a mum of three, twins, a boy and a girl and a second son.
This poem called Parents to be is the first one in the book and talks about the excitement felt by first time parents when finding out about their pregnancy. I wonder if you can relate to it…
Parents to be.
O.K. it’s positive,
it’s positive,
keep calm.
Should we do another test
in case it’s a false alarm?
It’s true,
so, we’re expecting…
a baby don’t you know.
Oh my gosh,
a baby,
my life is really going to go…
turning on its head,
turning upside down.
But hey,
it’s not so bad,
in fact, it’s pretty sound.
Hey,
it’s more than sound,
it’s amazing news,
It’s what we’ve always yearned for,
so, now it’s happened,
we’re pregnant,
now who could ask for more?
Do you think it will change us,
yes, but change us for good.
We will still always be a couple,
just with a baby that should…
improve our lives, teach us so much,
give us a chance to share…
our lives, our love as we build,
for our baby, a childhood beyond compare.
We’re in this thing together you know,
sharing all the way,
this our brand-new baby,
now just eight months away.
So, let’s enjoy the time together,
to prepare ourselves,
each other,
and then,
we’ll be ready to welcome our precious babe
and become a father and mother.
