Dyslexia is once again very much in the news with Jaime Oliver now asking for educational change and screening for all primary school children. Also, for the need for dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties and neurodiversity’s to be explored in teacher training. This would surely enable more understanding of the challenges faced by so many children and young people in all areas of education.
I feel the need for training on schools is vital. I offer training for schools in dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and autism. Please do get in touch if this could be helpful.
We have been here before, with the call for screening given from Matt Handcock, I’m not sure how far that went?
The importance of early awareness, recognition and if appropriate, diagnosis cannot be underestimated. Let’s hope that this has current news has a real impact and change can happen.
I behaved very badly at all my schools and at college and this behaviour was seen as be being a naughty child and teenager but I was crying out for help and support. One of my poems addresses this.
THERE IS ALWAYS A REASON FOR BEHAVIOUR
Why does he do what he does?
gosh she drives me mad,
why is there always one
and why is it always my class?
——
Well maybe you need to turn things around,
Maybe, just maybe it’s you.
Maybe you need to give it some thought
as to why you do things like you do.
O.K. you’ve always done it that way,
tradition, it’s just what we do.
——-
Well here’s a thought oh teacher dear,
see what the child may need,
see it through dyslexic eyes,
and think then how you may reach,
out to the child who misses the point,
cause she loses her place on the board,
reach out to the child
‘cause she heard what you said,
but can’t remember a single word.
——
For until you change,
see things the way
of a dyslexic learner
my friend,
there is no hope for the child in your class
that will never quite reach the end,
——
with expectations so high,
the same for all,
how then will they achieve?
For the dyslexic learner
who sits in your class
is the one
in which you need to believe.
